Investment Casting vs. Forging: Choosing the Right Process

Selecting the right manufacturing process is critical to the performance, cost, and reliability of precision components. At MELTRON Technology, we offer both investment casting and forging capabilities, enabling us to recommend the optimal process for each application.

Investment Casting (Lost-Wax Process)

Investment casting produces near-net-shape components with excellent surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The process involves creating a wax pattern, coating it with ceramic shell, melting out the wax, and pouring molten metal into the cavity.

Advantages of Investment Casting:

  • Complex geometries: Intricate internal passages, thin walls, and detailed features are achievable.
  • Excellent surface finish: Typical surface roughness of Ra 1.6 to 6.3 μm, reducing secondary machining.
  • Tight tolerances: Dimensional accuracy of ±0.1mm is standard.
  • Material versatility: Suitable for carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and superalloys.
  • Low tooling cost: Ideal for small to medium production volumes (10 to 10,000 pieces).

Best Applications:

Investment casting is ideal for turbocharger housings, pump impellers, valve bodies, aerospace brackets, and any component requiring complex geometry with minimal machining.

Forging

Forging shapes metal through compressive forces, producing components with superior mechanical properties due to refined grain structure and aligned grain flow.

Advantages of Forging:

  • Superior strength: Grain flow follows the component contour, enhancing fatigue resistance.
  • Impact resistance: Forged parts handle shock loads better than cast or machined components.
  • High production rates: Suitable for high-volume manufacturing (1,000+ pieces).
  • Cost-effective at scale: Lower per-part cost for large production runs.
  • Proven reliability: Decades of proven performance in critical applications.

Best Applications:

Forging excels for crankshafts, connecting rods, gears, flanges, railway components, and high-stress structural parts.
